I reached out to Marty in February 2025 with a big goal and a ridiculous timeline - to help me prepare for the Camino de Santiago with a 10-week timeline. The hiking training I had been doing on my own was good, but not enough. Marty reintroduced me to lifting, something I hadn’t done in over 20 years. I had no idea where to begin, and the thought of doing a “gym” workout was something I actively avoided. Adding a couple of lifting days to my weekly hiking training got me as ready as we could before I had to catch a plane.Adding Marty’s knowledge and expertise, I lost 20 pounds and gained so much strength before setting off for Portugal. My biggest dread of the trip was the thought of having to use a transport service for my backpack. One of my biggest victories of the trip was never having to send my pack forward.Working with Marty was never destined to be a one-off goal. I returned to the gym sessions with the goal to continue gaining strength while staying adventure ready for the next opportunity.Marty has been my biggest cheerleader, and instinctively knows when to push a little harder and when to adjust to accommodate for my fatigue. His fall challenge pushed me further to four gym sessions a week, which meant two days on my own. I never dreamt that I would willingly take myself to the gym and bust out a workout on my own. For 6-weeks, I got myself to the gym and focused on what was programmed for me with the goal of gaining overall strength. This challenge opportunity not only continued to build my strength, but fostered a consistency that I have never had in the past. A year ago, I would have never stepped foot in a weight room. Now, it is becoming something I do intrinsically, both at home and while traveling.Thanks to Marty, I have learned to enjoy the gym and lifting challenge he has provided to me, both through one-on-one training sessions and online, with the goal to keep hiking and spending as much time on trails as possible.
